| About UsAbout UsEducation is the key to opportunities in life. The college aims to offer best technical education to the poorest people in the community. (uplift the marginalized) Machui Community College is non-profit training institute founded by Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood C.P.S. It is an innovative education focused on empowering the marginalized members of the society through appropriate skill development leading to employment in local industries or self-employment. This education does not discriminate on age, and has no minimum qualification. It emphasizes more on competencies and attitude of the students rather than paperwork. There are many youths dropping out of schools, who lacked appropriate skills that would enable them acquire employment in formal, public or private sectors. There are various reasons why young people do not complete education but most are related to poverty and cultural backgrounds. There are single mothers who left school due to pregnancies; others have been orphaned by AIDS pandemic while others migrated from mainland to look for jobs in the island. We felt that by giving them training opportunities, it would in long run enable them improve their living conditions and that of their families. The unique feature of Machui Community College is trying to match training with job opportunities available in the local situation. To achieve this a need assessment is carried to establish what the employers’ need, emerging industries and trend in the market, this enables us to train people for the jobs that are easily available in the locality thus achieving high employment rates for the graduates.
HISTORY OF THE SCHOOLMachui is a small village in central district of southern region of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is a semi autonomous made mainly of twin islands of Unguja and Pemba, which with mainland form the United Republic of Tanzania. Zanzibar is historical town renown for its trade route between Europe and Asia and spice farming. Cloves were a major export earner until early 80s when other Asian countries mass-produced the crop and prices fell. The Island has no heavy industries and tourism is picking up after government allowed it when spice farming could no longer support its budget. Thus tourism is still in its infancy stage and there are opportunities for jobs to those who posses the desirable skills. The school started in1997 in a makeshift shed training apprentice carpenters and motor vehicle mechanics and tailoring courses. In 1998 the students were able to do government trade examinations.
